A few weeks ago, a debate about inflation quickly descended into bigotry, and for a while, I wasn’t going to dignify this blatant racism with a response. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I could not let the bigoted use of “illegal” from a veteran go unchallenged because the one thing that pisses me off is someone on stolen land calling another human illegal. That's the most racist, bigoted, anti-American thing anyone can say. Veterans like him are the reason why I do not stand during the National Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance because I will not accidentally honor an anti-American bigot alongside honoring my family. Nope.
The US had open borders for the first 100 years of its existence, and I would think any good American, especially a veteran, would have the ability and desire to live as our Founding Fathers did, but I know it's difficult for the softer Americans today of this country to compete with the uneducated and undocumented of another. It's unbelievable that illegals are taking everyone's job and yet are also so lazy they also receive millions of dollars in handouts to sit on their hands.
As one of the founding members of the Republican Party said about Christian clergy supporting slavery in the 1850s, "I preferred, if God was on that side, to stand with the Devil rather; for he was silent, at least."
American history has shown time and time again that Satan must be on the side of liberty and freedom—a place I'll always stand when so many won't. Someone has to stand up for our nation's values because God and veterans won’t.
Which is it? The racist talking points are quwhite confusing! And let's not forget, it’s Donald “Kloseted Klansman” Trump taking credit for tanking the latest border policy because it says it helps him win elections, so why aren't you upset at him? Voting for the guy who admits he won’t fix something so racists will vote for him seems counterproductive, but the GOP has been voting against its own interests for 60 years now, hoping to allure Americans who like calling others "illegal” to the voting booth.
As a Mexican-American with immigrant family members, fuck you. If white Christian Europeans were allowed into this country unfettered for a century, why is it wrong for them to be brown Central and South American Catholics today? Legit question. What's the difference, and why?
The only answer I can come up with is white Christian bigotry and racism, as the two have been quite inseparable throughout American history.
My grandfather earned his citizenship through serving in the US Army, something immigrants before him didn't have to do, but different standards for different people, right? That's the American way you so love?
And I find it so goddamn insulting that you'd call anyone attempting to come here and make a better life for themselves "illegal." It’s a term people who don't want to work use because they don't want to compete with actual hard workers, as every bit of actual evidence points to undocumented workers contributing more to the US system than they take and committing crimes at a lower rate than the average white, Christian man. Those are indisputable facts, but America has been a place that establishes different standards depending on your creed.
And the richness to evoke God at the end like some fascist panacea. Fuck your Middle Eastern "god." At every point in American history where we have attempted to expand freedom and liberty to more citizens, it's been the Christian god that has stood in the way. Americans have used the mythological figure to stand against abolition, women's suffrage, desegregation, the Civil Rights Act, the fucking US Disability Act, marriage equality, trans rights, the First Amendment, and so much more, so please, I don't want to be blessed by someone so clearly anti-American.
There is nothing more harmful or hateful than Christianity, and evoking God in the same post as turning away the downtrodden coming to this country is just indicative of the poisonous ideology. The faith is fundamentally incompatible with basic American values.
