Nearly 90 percent of Black American voters supported Joe Biden and the Democratic Party in 2020, saving this county from an authoritarian, anti-majoritarian, anti-democratic demagogue and his cowardly party of lazy grifting sycophants while handing Democrats a historical opportunity to fully realize this country’s long-denied promise of Liberty for everyone.
But one man from the State of West Virginia, a state born from questionable constitutional origins that couldn’t engage in the evils of slavery, doesn’t believe in that promise made 245 years ago in Philadelphia when men of high hopes and miscalculated dreams declared themselves free of British rule.
Ending the filibuster, a made-up problem to the Constitution’s simple majoritarian solution, to pass HR1 and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act is a bridge too far in governance for the senator.
It’s infuriating.
But, doing the right thing should always trump politics.
Will Manchin lose his seat if he ends the filibuster?
Yes—and that shouldn’t matter.
Will risky Democratic seats turn red?
Yeah—and that shouldn’t matter, either.
Will our government end up more representative than before?
Yes—and that’s what really matters if the Democratic Party believes in what it’s preaching.
But even if Manchin killed the filibuster and passed HR1 and JLVRA, there’s little doubt Republican state legislatures would mobilize to sue the bill to the Supreme Court so John Roberts could again ensure White Supremacy continues its 402-year reign over its subjects and debtors.
Here’s The Tip Jar!
Listen to the GOP froth at the mouth just thinking about the opportunity to weaponize a filibuster-free Congress against American citizens it doesn’t believe should have equal treatment under the law. Only a sick and depraved party would use the threat of disenfranchisement as a weapon against what the Founders had wanted, using it as a rallying cry for a party that supposedly loves the freest country in the world so much so that it will threaten other Americans’ freedoms.
It’s certainly a sick one.
“End it, and bad things could happen. Hehehehe!” they squee like maniacal gremlins.
It’s a threat by a party holding onto power not with popular policy, but by holding the country hostage because the GOP is not the party of freedom and liberty. It’s a power-seeking panoply of white privilege, sexist patriarchy, and false prophets who want nothing more than control. Small government and free markets are a lie.
And it’s not like Republicans have been quiet about their true intentions and fears, cowering at the idea of a country for the people, by the people, and of the people so much so that they want to make it harder for some of those people to cast their vote. They have said time and time again the quiet part out loud that allowing everyone a vote in the freest country in the world would kill the Republican Party.

How is that democracy’s problem?
Sounds more like a party problem that the lazy dullards are too incompetent to fix themselves. Instead, the GOP twists the Constitution and the mechanisms of government, designed to disenfranchise millions at its origins, so that it can game the system and remain in power because the ultimate goal isn’t liberty. It’s dominance the party wants, even if it means destroying democracy to achieve it.
The window to starving off democratic catastrophe is quickly closing, with the Democrats too cowardly, weak, and disinterested in stopping it. Holding both houses of congress and the presidency—two branches of a tri-branch tree—apparently isn’t enough to save democracy from itself.
Just as Joe Manchin wants.
The power and draw of White Supremacy is too great for one man to overcome, though its authoritarian ancestors and descendants will happily put him on a pedestal alongside the countless Confederate statues that’ll dot the countryside within a decade when Republicans have the power to subvert the next presidential election and throw this country into a constitutional crisis as they pull out all the stops to steal the presidency.
When Democrats have both branches of government in a future that will never happen, maybe then we’ll have the will to do the right thing to protect democracy.
Democrats should be selling HR1 as a transformative effort to give more people representation at the table, an opportunity to have more voices heard so that we don’t wither with such partisan bullshitting. Admit Democrats could lose seats and admit that that is a good thing. Admit that a more representative government is better for all Americans regardless of who wins and loses.
If we’re a representative government, then we should act like one because if we’re not, what’s the fucking point?
