So this is really it, huh?
An unending cascade of calamities until we check out? Probably from some form of cancer caused by the food we eat, the air we breathe, or the water we drink.
The next 50 years on this Earth aren’t looking too peachy, to be honest. Climate change will fundamentally alter how we live while needlessly killing millions of people in the process.
Mother Nature is already out for its revenge, and humanity is auditioning for the role of the aloof jock who gets picked off with a pickaxe to the forehead in the first 10 minutes of a horror flick.
The global order that has led to one of the most peaceful periods in human history is buckling under the growing weight of right-wing authoritarian movements. Fascist strongmen are seizing power and gaining popularity at an alarming speed, turning bigoted grievances into votes and violence.
Everything feels a bit pointless, now, doesn’t it? Why bother with the bullshit? You can only shovel shit for so long until you drown, exhausted at trying to change the system or indifferent to it killing you.
Shrug your shoulders, drink that six-pack, and smash another Big Mac meal; you’re going out fat, drunk, and happy.
Who could blame you? I can’t.
Unplug. Fuck the freak-out, man.
All we have is time, and we’re running out of it. It feels as if there’s a ticking clock hidden somewhere in the house, and we can hear it incessantly tick-tick-ticking down, but we’re going mad trying to find it, uncertain how much time is left or what it’s ticking down to.
That tightening you feel in the chest is called anxiety.
The weight of uncertainty endlessly pressing down harder and harder on us as our problems pile up will only push to divide us further as we grow desperate for certainty, desperate for some sort of hope. But no politician with any power wants to change the system that pays their salary, fearful of upsetting the powerful people who give the politicians their authority in the first place.
The problems are compounding, beginning to spiral out of control, gripping the entire nation, the world, in a nihilistic chokehold. If there’s no intervention, those suffocating will happily submit.
There’s Hope:
